My main aim is to bring out the essence and most natural side of the sitter. For a successful portrait, it is essential that the sitter has confidence and enjoys the process. This comes about through a mixture of a calm approach, communication, and at times, deep concentration.
I like to work from sittings, backed up by sketches and photos so I can continue the portrait back in the studio. Some drawings and paintings are done almost exclusively from sittings while others involve a more combined approach. The number of sittings depends on the type of portrait, geography and on the availability and interest of the sitter.

• For a painting the minimum is two or three sittings at the start of the process, possibly another in the middle and one at the end.

 • With children I like to spend half a day to a day with them for the initial setting. This is held in their home surroundings, to get to know them and build their confidence and trust, as well as to make sketches and take photos.

 • For larger works such as group portraits, after an initial meeting, I will produce two or three ideas for discussion with the client. I am experienced in advising on all aspects of portraiture and enjoy talking through different ideas with clients.
